Visual Narrative: Artist's Books and Pages as Expressive Media

What place does the physical book have in contemporary life and art? Whether large format coffee table collections of photographs, small-runs of exhibition catalogues or handmade unique book-art, the haptic needs of the hands to caress the binding, turn the pages and smooth the corners is an experience unique to this medium and just as important as experiencing the visual information contained within. But has the book become an archaic means of communicating our stories, or are there still purposes and pleasures that can only be experienced through the unique qualities of books and pages? A brief overview of the spectrum of book-art will help the audience to appreciate the scope of book-making as practiced by artists, and find answers to these questions.
