In October 2005, two days changed Salbke, a district of Magdeburg. A temporary full-size model of a "bookmark" was constructed on the site of a former public library from 1,000 beer crates, which formed an open-space bookshelf filled with donated books gathered from all over the city. To ensure local awareness of the project, the process was characterized by local interaction: citizens formed the design, the crates came from a local store and residents and municipal employees were involved in the construction of the Bookmark.

Although the library was part of the city for only two days, the effects are lasting. Residents have made their own informal library in Salbke. There are tangible ideas for the development of the unused site and the actual construction of the Bookmark is presently underway.
