The garden as a site of energy and exchange discussed on 23.6.

In Western cultures the garden is often viewed as a passive site of aesthetic pleasure, an exclusive retreat for the well to do. Visiting a historic garden is usually an escape into a fantasy of nature and fake nostalgia. Justin Carter focuses on some of his own projects to explore what a garden is and how people relate to it as a concept and a reality. How can artistic practice broaden and develop the potential of the garden through participation and imagination, for future scenarios? Referencing a range of artists from Buster Simpson to Alan Sonfist, as well as the international culture of allotment gardening, he pays homage to those individuals and gardens (famous and not so famous) who have influenced and inspired his work.
