The use of living vegetation as an artistic medium is a widespread yet largely neglected phenomenon in contemporary art. Plants appear in a variety of thematic and visual contexts in a spectrum ranging from subversive experiments in garden sculpture to hybrid biotopes and sophisticated garden complexes. Barbara Nemitz, artist and professor at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, wrote the first book on the subject ever published. The KünstlerGärten Weimar, an ongoing project she has directed since 1993, consists of permanent works of plant art realised by international artists in Weimar, an extensive archive of materials, a lecture series, the magazine "wachsen" (growing) and an edition of graphic works. Barbara Nemitz will introduce the specific appearance and expression caused by the use of living plants in art in public spaces.
