The presentation focuses on the possibilities of translating and (re)contextualising visual heritage. Taking Dezs? Magyar's two films, "Agitators" (1969) and "Punitive Expedition" (1970), as a starting point, it aims to approach the critical and aesthetic strategies these works may carry from the radically different visuality of today's art context. Although these two films incorporate images, styles and references from the then-current media, their layeredness and complexity challenge conventional ways of viewing and thinking. After decades of having been banned from public consciousness, these "historical" works, via their recontextualisation in the contemporary art context, may open up new possibilities for approaching and understanding how the social and cultural (and revolutionary) landscape of a nation is constructed.

Lívia Páldi is a curator based in Budapest.
