"Beginning in the late 1980s and throughout the 1990s Wolfram P. Kastner adopted a new form of interventionist commemorative activity, organizing installations and public performance pieces at historically sensitive sites in the city in order to raise awareness of its sordid history during the Nazi era. Most notably his 1995 project, "Brandfleck," a burnt hole, created on the lawn of the Königsplatz to recall the Nazi book burnings of 1933 on the site. This project was first prohibited by local city officials.

But his interventionist approach has successfully worked to counter the all-too-frequent formulaic and ritualistic dimension exhibited by many memorials in Germany and Austria. Even if many of his projects have not been lasting or have been prohibited outright, he has challenged the mnemonic status quo and forced people to rethink their inherited assumptions about the recent past."
