Positions and strategies, dealing with death, occupation, terror, and war in Israeli art.

Since the declaration of independence of the state of Israel, its existence has been continuously jeopardized, daily routine and terror permanently entwined. Artists have always been voicing their view on the more and more frightening reality. Considered political artists or rejecting this problematic title, many of them deal with themes which then find curatorial common dominators, such as short and long term memory, dead-end, and postscripts. Connections to Holocaust, memory, and commemoration create a clear line from the traumatic 'there and then' to the political 'here and now', visibly binding the past with the present. What is the role of art and of the artist in a society so habitually used to being terrorized and terrorizing at the same time? And how extreme can this art get with such a reality at its base?
