For anybody political there are sites of memory associated with important political events. Since cities like Bonn or Berlin are too large to represent only one particular event, it is often small or distant places like Stammheim, Erftstadt or Mogadishu that become synonyms for certain events. In this lecture some of these places will be introduced as sites of memory that have formed the collective memory and identity of the Federal Republic of Germany. However, there is a difference between positive and negative sites of memory; while Mogadishu triggers positive memories of more than 80 hostages being freed by German border police, Erftstadt will bring up memories of German authorities failing to rescue Hanns Martin Schleyer who was taken hostage and eventually murdered by the terrorist Red Army Faction (RAF).
