Jacquelynn Baas will discuss the philosophical background of Marcel Duchamp's experiential understanding of art and of artmaking as a process of unveiling reality, revealing a "double view" of its relative and absolute aspects. She will show examples of ways in which art can create awareness of interconnectedness and generate conditions for social change.

Director Emeritus of the Berkeley Art Museum, Baas is author of the book Smile of the Buddha: Eastern Philosophy and Western Art from Monet to Today (Univ. of Calif. Press 2005) and co-editor with Mary Jane Jacob of Buddha Mind in Contemporary Art (UC Press 2004). She recently curated the special exhibition Duchamp, Cage, and Especially Fluxus for the 6th Gwangju Biennale (Fall 2006).
