Walter Hood creates "public landscapes" informed by the place, time, and social uses of each environment. Departing from the conventional practices of landscape design, in which he was trained, he searches out stories and ways of living that more deeply reflect the specific cultural, environmental, and physical complexities of a given city, neighborhood, or rural site. Founder and principal architect of Oakland-based Hood Design, he is also author of the award-winning book, Everyday Urbanism, Urban Diaries: Improvisation in West Oakland. In 2005 Hood completed to high praise the landscape and sculpture garden for new Herzog & de Meuron-designed De Young Museum at Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. He is on the faculty in the University of California, Berkeley's Department of Landscape Architecture. Hood is also pursuing degree at SAIC in the MFA in Studio: Distinguished Fellows Program.
