Taking the theme of 'The Subversion of Standstill' as its starting point, this talk will wonder about the very possibility of movement (or standstill), or, more particularly, the possibility of the control of movement (or standstill). It will consider the possibility of cultural practice outside of straightforward binary oppositions such as moving/still, fast/slow, action/inaction, present/absent, and even good/bad. In the place of things being simply one thing or another, ideas of 'positive taking-away' and 'materialised interval' will be suggested.

Sam Gathercole is an art historian, writer and curator based in London. Sam has published in numerous books and journals. Recently he curated (with Claire Davies) Good Riddance, MOT, London February-March 2007, and (with Steven Gartside) concrete thoughts: modern architecture and contemporary art, Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester, October-December 2006. Sam also lectures in art history, and is currently teaching at Roehampton University, London.
